A Check Engine Light Warning Could Mean Your Exhaust Manifold Is Cracked

Trojan Auto Care advises that the check engine light may illuminate on the dashboard if the exhaust manifold cracks. You may also end up with a CEL warning if the manifold gasket cracks. The reason why is that the crack releases exhaust into the engine and causes numerous problems. We are going to list these problems below. Do not worry. We can replace the exhaust manifold or gasket if it needs it.

Performance Problems

Once there is a crack in the manifold or manifold gasket, hot exhaust will escape from the manifold and fill the engine. These exhaust gases can actually affect your engine’s performance because they clog the combustion chamber. When this happens, the chamber has a difficult time producing engine combustion. As such, your vehicle’s engine performance will lag.

Reduced Gas Mileage

We wish we could say that this is the only problem, but it isn’t. As the engine struggles to perform, it will use up more fuel than it normally does. Consequently, as unbelievable as it is, a cracked exhaust manifold or gasket can actually reduce your gas mileage. This is extremely frustrating with gas prices getting higher and higher every day.

Strong Burning Odors

You will also notice strong burning odors coming from the engine. As we mentioned above, the exhaust is hot when it leaks out of the crack. In fact, the exhaust is so hot that it can melt nearby engine parts that are made from susceptible materials. For example, it can melt plastic parts. It can also melt rubber parts. In addition to the burning odors, your engine will also overheat.

Strong Exhaust Odors

Because the engine is filled with exhaust gases, it is not uncommon for the gases to be picked up by the ventilation system and pushed into the passenger cabin. Consequently, you may notice exhaust odors while you are driving your automobile. If you do, we strongly urge you to pull over and call for a tow truck to our shop. Inhaling engine exhaust can be deadly.

Noises After Ignition

Finally, you may hear strange noises when you first start your vehicle’s engine if it has a manifold or gasket leak. As the exhaust leaks out of the manifold or gasket, it can make tapping noises. It can also make hissing noises. If you hear these noises, you have a crack in the manifold or gasket.
