Malfunctioning Auto Parts Turn On the Check Engine Light

Well, actually, the engine control module turns on the check engine light but it turns it on because a system sensor has reported a part malfunction. Trojan Auto Care is going to list the common part malfunctions below that trigger a check engine warning that will not turn off until you resolve the problem. As an aside, if your check engine light is flashing, do not drive your automobile because this is a sign of serious engine damage.

Catalytic Converter

A faulty catalytic converter can trigger a check engine warning because the exhaust will fill with hydrocarbons that are dangerous to the environment. Generally, the catalytic converter needs to be changed every 10 years to avoid this problem.

EVAP Control System

The EVAP control system controls the evaporation of fuel from your automobile. Specifically, it is designed to prevent it. If something goes wrong and fuel starts to evaporate from the engine or the fuel system, you’ll receive a check engine warning. Will also receive a check engine warning if your gas cap is too loose.

Engine Control Module

It might seem funny, but the engine control module will actually turn on the check engine light if it is malfunctioning. You’ll get a check engine warning before your engine dies completely. Unfortunately, your engine will not restart until the ECM is replaced.

Malfunctioning MAF Sensor

Another part that can generate a check engine warning is a malfunctioning mass airflow sensor. This sensor detects incoming air and reports the volume to the engine control module. If it malfunctions, the module may skew the air and fuel in the combustion chamber. The result is poor engine performance and a check engine warning.

Malfunctioning O2 Sensor

The same is true with the oxygen sensor when it malfunctions. This being said, the oxygen sensor performs a different job. It tracks the oxygen in the exhaust. The O2 sensor generally lasts about 100,000 miles before it needs to be replaced. If you drive an older automobile, it may need to be replaced as soon as 30,000 miles.

Worn Plugs and Wires

Finally, the spark plugs and wires can cause the ECM to turn on the check engine light. This is because they will cause the engine to misfire, sputter, and stall. If you replace the plugs and wires, this will restore your engine’s performance and cut the check engine light.
