My Engine Has Suddenly Gotten Very Loud

The problem with a loud engine is that you could get a moving violation. If your engine has suddenly gotten very loud, you’ve probably got a hole in the muffler. Trojan Auto Care can replace your muffler if it needs it. A faulty muffler is just one sign of exhaust system problems. We are going to discuss the other signs below. Bring your vehicle to our shop if you notice any of the following problems.

Acceleration Lag and Power Loss

If your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s exhaust system is clogged, the engine exhaust is backing up into the combustion chamber and preventing fresh combustion. If the exhaust system is leaking, it is filling the engine with the exhaust gases. Either of these conditions can cause your vehicle’s acceleration to lag and noticeable power loss in the engine.

A Noticeable Reduction in Fuel Economy

Unfortunately, another thing that will be noticeable is a reduction in your automobile’s fuel economy. This is because the engine is struggling to produce combustion efficiently. An inefficient engine tends to use the fuel more quickly in order to keep running. Naturally, if it is burning through the fuel faster, you will need to fill the tank more often.

Burning Plastic Odors in the Engine

Oftentimes, the problem with the exhaust system is a cracked exhaust manifold gasket. When this happens, scorching exhaust is released into the engine. Unfortunately, the exhaust is so hot that it can melt neighboring plastic and rubber parts. If you smell burning plastic or rubber odors coming from the engine, you might have a cracked manifold gasket.

A Noticeably Damaged Tailpipe

It’s a good idea to inspect your tailpipe every once in a while to make sure that it hasn’t been damaged by road debris. Noticeable damage includes holes, corrosion, and dents. If you drive over a speed bump too fast and hear a clunk followed by a dragging sound, you’ve knocked your tailpipe off of its bearings. A damaged tailpipe should be replaced.

Diesel Fuel or Gasoline Odors

Finally, if your exhaust system is leaking or has been clogged by carbon deposits, you may smell the diesel fuel or gasoline in your passenger cabin. You should never drive your automobile with the exhaust flowing into the cabin. This can cause carbon monoxide poisoning that can lead to death.
