What Happens When My Car’s Air Filter Gets Clogged?

When your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s air filter gets clogged, the engine will struggle to perform. You will notice that the engine sputters and your acceleration legs. You will also notice a significant difference in your vehicle’s fuel economy. This can also happen if the fuel filter gets clogged. This is why it’s important to have your automotive filters changed when they need it. Trojan Auto Care lists the different automotive filters below and their general changing schedules.

Air

The air filter needs to be changed every 12,000 miles. This is the filter that removes dirt and contaminants from the air that blows into the engine. The engine uses this air for combustion. If you don’t do a lot of driving, you should change your air filter once a year. Again, a clogged air filter can cause serious problems with the performance and fuel economy you get out of your engine.

Cabin

Your vehicle might also be equipped with a cabin air filter. Not all automobiles have this filter. If yours does, the cabin filter needs to be changed every 30,000 miles. This is a general recommendation that can vary widely between vehicle makes and models and cabin filter types. Check your owner’s manual to see if your automobile is equipped with a cabin air filter. If it is, the manual will also provide the changing schedule.

Fuel

The fuel filter also needs to be changed every 30,000 miles. This filter cleans the fuel of contaminants and sediment. You need clean air and fuel in the combustion chamber in order for your vehicle to start and run. If the fuel filter is clogged, you may end up with zero fuel in the combustion chamber and an inability to start your car, truck, or utility vehicle.

Oil

The oil filter is changed every 3,000 miles. Changing this filter is part of any oil service. The oil filter is responsible for removing any dirt or grime that the oil picks up while it travels through your engine. It’s important that the oil is clean each time it is circulated through the engine. The oil filter makes sure this happens.

Transmission

Finally, if your vehicle has a transmission filter, the owner’s manual will indicate that it does and the changing schedule. In most cases, the transmission filter is changed every 30,000 miles when the transmission fluid is changed.
