Why Are Automotive Fluids Different Colors?

The reason why your automotive fluids come in different colors is that it makes it easier to identify them if your car, truck, or utility vehicle starts to leak. It’s important to know the fluid leaking out of your automobile because it might not be safe to drive it. Trojan Auto Care is going to list, by color, the different fluids you will find in your automobile.

Blue

Blue is not a common color of automotive fluid. Generally, the only fluid in your vehicle that is blue is the windshield washing solution. You might have antifreeze/coolant that has a bluish tint to it, but this is rare. You can continue to drive your automobile if it’s leaking the washing solution for the windshield.

Brown

Brown is a common color of automotive fluid. As you already know, the motor oil in the engine is brown. In most cases, the brake fluid is brown, as well. Two other fluids that are brown are the differential oil and the transmission fluid if it is old and dirty. Driving your automobile when it is leaking brown fluid can be dangerous and may also damage the engine.

Clear

Clear fluid is usually just water dripping off of your vehicle’s air conditioner. You might also see water dripping out of the tailpipe. Both of these things are normal and nothing to worry about. If the clear fluid smells like fuel, you should worry and not drive your automobile.

Green

The antifreeze/coolant and your vehicle’s cooling system may be green, green-blue, or bright neon green. You don’t want to drive your car, truck, or utility vehicle if it is leaking antifreeze/coolant. Driving the automobile will cause it to overheat.

Orange

Orange fluid indicates a problem. It indicates that your radiator’s bottom has rusted out. The orange color of the fluid is caused by the rust particles in the antifreeze/coolant. Orange fluid can also be transmission fluid that is getting old and needs to be changed.

Pink

Pink fluid also indicates a problem. Pink fluid is a mixture of transmission fluid and coolant. This is a sign of a serious breach between the two systems. Driving your automobile can severely damage it.

Red

Red is another common automotive fluid color. Your power steering fluid and transmission fluid are both red. Brake fluid can also be red, as can antifreeze/coolant.

Yellow

Finally, antifreeze/coolant also comes in bright yellow or yellow-green. Again, don’t drive your automobile if it is leaking antifreeze/coolant.
