How to avoid costly exhaust system repair

Your car’s exhaust system controls emissions, reduces engine noise, and helps your engine breathe properly. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the most neglected systems regarding maintenance. Faulty exhaust systems have been known to cause severe problems such as reduced engine performance, excessive noise, and even fires in extreme cases.

Regular Inspection

A routine inspection of your vehicle’s exhaust system is the most crucial preventative measure. Also, be attentive to your car’s sounds, smells, and vibrations. A loud rumbling or hissing noise from the engine often signals that there may be an exhaust problem. Take your vehicle to a trustworthy technician for professional inspection and diagnosis of emerging issues.

Change the Oil

Although it may seem contrary, oil can damage your vehicle’s exhaust system. The burned oil that collects in your engine valvetrain leads to buildups in the exhaust system, causing damage and blockages. Change your oil regularly and use the recommended type and viscosity for your engine, environmental, and driving conditions.

Avoid Overloading

A heavy load significantly strains your car’s exhaust system, forcing it to crank up the power to pull it. Overloading can cause cracks and leaks in the exhaust system and reduce mileage. Avoid overloading your vehicle beyond its capacity; if you must, opt for lighter loads, load distribution, or shorter trips to reduce the engine strain.

Watch out for Salted Roads

In regions with loads of snowfall, roads are often salted to prevent slippery conditions during winter. Though necessary, salted roads contribute significantly to the corrosion of your vehicle’s undercarriage. Once salt interacts with water, it creates rust and holes in your exhaust system. Rinse off your car with clean water and a rust inhibitor spray.

Your car’s exhaust system is an essential part of your vehicle that keeps your car running at its best. A malfunctioning exhaust system can lead to severe consequences, ranging from reduced performance to costing you thousands in repairs. By performing regular maintenance, changing the oil, avoiding overloading, being cautious on salted roads, and availing of timely repairs, you’re keeping your car healthy and preventing extensive repairs.
